Liam Patterson-White returned second-innings figures of 4/38 but Nottinghamshire fell just short of a thrilling comeback as Yorkshire edged home by one wicket at Trent Bridge.

Patterson-White was backed up by Mohammad Ali’s three scalps, while Brett Hutton also took two, but Jonny Bairstow’s 38 not out was the difference as the visitors chased down 185 in tense circumstances.

After Notts had been dismissed for 85 in a tough start to the day, with Jack White taking 5/23 for the White Rose, they almost rose to the challenge of defending the target but were just thwarted at the last.

Adam Lyth and Will Luxton added 54 for the first wicket to make the early inroads into the target, only for the home bowling attack to hit back strongly, and almost spectacularly.

From 70-1, Yorkshire lost their next six wickets for just 60 runs as the chase threatened to be derailed in stunning circumstances, with Hutton claiming the first two before Patterson-White and Ali joined in.

Half-centurion Luxton, who reached his fifty in 78 balls, followed Lyth, Sam Whiteman, and James Wharton back to the pavilion as the visiting top order were all removed before the score hit three figures.

The middle order suffered much the same fate too, as Matthew Revis was bowled by Ali, George Hill was stumped for the second time in the match, and Dom Bess nicked behind.

With Yorkshire still in need of 28 runs and with number nine Ben Coad at the crease, Notts sensed an opportunity, and Patterson-White spun out Coad and Ben Cliff to leave five still required.

However, Bairstow, unbeaten at the other end, remained resolute, and in gut-wrenching scenes for the hosts, went on to slam six off the penultimate ball of the next over to eke out the victory for his side.
