Georgia Elwiss hit an imperious unbeaten 93 as The Blaze secured their spot in the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup quarter-finals, defeating Durham by eight wickets.
The right-hander came to the crease from the second ball of the game, amassing her runs from 58 balls as her side took their strong all-format form into the knockout format.
England opener Tammy Beaumont made 53, with Michaela Kirk contributing a useful run-a-ball 17, as last season’s semi-finalists made a strong start to their 2026 campaign.
Marie Kelly’s side won the toss and opted to bowl under glorious West Bridgford skies, and Grace Ballinger began economically – her first over going for five, and her second producing a wicket maiden as Leah Dobson’s chased a slightly wider delivery and succeeded only in finding the gloves of Claridge for 1.
Academy graduate Maria Andrews was trusted to open the bowling alongside Ballinger, and was rewarded with a first senior T20 wicket in her second over, Mia Rogers’ missing an attempted carve over cover, with Claridge whipping off the bails.
That came from the final delivery of the Powerplay, the hosts’ economical bowling and proactivity in the field restricting Durham to a mere 34 runs.
But the pedigree of Bess Heath and Hollie Armitage began to show as restrictions were relaxed, the duo dovetailing nicely to elevate the run-rate towards seven.
But Heath’s call for a second run to Georgie Boyce at third proved fatal, Claridge completing the run-out despite a sprawling dive from the Chesterfield-born batter.
Armitage’s class remained clear, the skipper sprinting to a 34-ball half-century as the lightning-fast Lady Bay outfield saw her chalk up seven fours in the course of making fifty.
Emma Marlow provided support, until an Andrews delivery cannoned into her leg stump to see her depart for 23.
Armitage remained the aggressor in a 47-run partnership with Grace Thompson, with the latter departing after 19.4 overs to a fine Michaela Kirk catch, the Blaze fielder maintaining her compsure and her footwork to complete a fine take at long on.
Skipper Armitage carried her bat for 81, as Durham set The Blaze 168 to progress to the last eight.
The hosts got off to the worst possible start in the chase, Trudy Johnson on the money with her first delivery to castle captain Kelly from the first ball.
But Georgia Elwiss was immediately on the counter-attack with a brace of first innings boundaries, and alongside Tammy Beaumont motored to a fifty stand from just 26 balls.
Beaumont was proficient on the back foot, Elwiss punishing anything too full, as The Blaze completed the Powerplay on 70 runs, firmly in the ascendancy.
That precipitated a period of consolidation, but the second-wicket pair’s rotation of strike led them to 93/1 at halfway, 21 more than their opponents at the same stage.
Elwiss reached her half-century a little earlier than her partner, but both reached the milestone from 34 balls before Beaumont swept Sophia Turner to Grace Thompson at square leg.
But The Blaze retained their control as Kirk joined Elwiss in the middle, the latter continuing to pounce on any deviation in length as the hosts entered the final five overs needing 39 more, with eight wickets in hand.
The hosts were making light work of the chase, and this was Elwiss’ day, hitting the lions’ share of the runs in a fifty stand with Kirk as she went to the highest total of the game.
While a century was frustratingly out of reach, it was fitting that the former Vipers all-rounder hit the game’s winning boundary, finishing on 93* as The Blaze secured their passage to the last eight with nine balls to spare.
