Farhan Ahmed and captain Freddie McCann combined to take four of the last five wickets for just six runs as Nottinghamshire 2nd XI completed a stunning one-run win against the odds over arch-rivals Derbyshire at Lady Bay.
Chasing 300 to win in their second innings, Derbyshire were comfortable at 292-5, having added an unbroken century stand for the sixth wicket up to that point.
However, in barely-believable scenes, Ahmed, who led the attack with 4/98, and McCann, who returned 3/34, took four scalps in just 13 balls as the visitors crashed to 297-9.
Byron Hatton-Lowe then completed the job during Ahmed’s next over with a direct-hit run-out as the hosts showed their mettle to close out a famous win by the narrowest margin.
Sam Seecharan had begun the day by striking a second century of the match, adding an unbeaten 127 from 123 balls, with 14 fours and three sixes, to his first-innings 116.
It allowed him and Ben Martindale, who made 58 - his second half-century of the clash - to put on an opening stand of 125, before Ahmed stylishly struck an unbeaten 34-ball 42.
The hosts subsequently declared their quickfire second innings on 246-2, setting up Derbyshire’s target of exactly 300.
Having reached 135-1 from 33 overs, they were hauled in by three wickets for Ahmed and one for Joe Pocklington, with Nick Potts and Yousaf Bin Naeem out for 65 and 57, respectively.
That reduced the visitors to a far more in-the-balance 182-5, but when Rohan Vallabhaneni, who made 71, put on 110 alongside Niall McHale, who hit 41, they were on course.
However, they failed to account for what followed, as McCann, who turned 21 just under a week ago, took three for four in eight balls, and Ahmed one for one in the over in between.
It left the equation at three to win - down to two when last man Josh Croom scampered a single off his first ball from McCann.
However, Derbyshire never crossed the line as Croom and Jack Morley, attempting another hurried single to start Ahmed’s 29th over of the innings, got in each other’s way while doing so.
It meant Croom failed to make his ground at the bowler’s end before Hatton-Lowe’s bullet throw took the middle stump out, leaving the Green and Golds to celebrate a thrilling victory.
