Georgia Elwiss is relishing another outground experience as The Blaze host Yorkshire at Chesterfield’s Queen’s Park tomorrow (10.30am start)

The all-rounder is part of a 13-strong squad for the final fixture of a short 50-over block, before attention returns to the Vitality Blast.

Elwiss hammered 93 from 58 balls in a winning cause against Durham in the Vitality Women’s T20 County Cup at Lady Bay, and is looking forward to playing at another home-from-home tomorrow.

“We love playing at Chesterfield,” she said.

“It's somewhere you can get up close with all the fans, so hopefully we get a good number of people supporting us.

“I think we know it's going to be a quick scoring game. We've seen that Derbyshire have played Lancs there this week as well, so we kept an eye on the scores in that game.

“I think spin will probably come into it as well, now we’re moving into the latter half of the season, and especially with this heat wave making the pitches quite dry.”

The Blaze’s results have remained strong in recent weeks despite losing a number of more senior players to World Cup duty.

The likes of Maria Andrews and Prisha Thanawala have been able to enjoy extended runs of first team cricket, and Elwiss has been impressed with the squad’s resilience.

“This was always going to be a really crucial part of the season for our side, knowing that with the World Cup on we were going to be losing a large cohort of our starting XI,” she said.

“We’ve been able to dig deep and show our depth.

“We’re really happy with how our 50-over season has gone so far but we don’t want to leave a sour taste in the mouth with a defeat tomorrow.

“We definitely know that we’re going to be up against it and we’ll have to play our best cricket – but we’re pretty happy generally with where we are as a side.”

Victory at Lady Bay followed only the third defeat of the season for The Blaze at Blackpool, as Lancashire ran out victorious on home turf.

And Elwiss felt the home comforts of the side’s regular training ground at the Notts Sports Club were beneficial as the side looked to get back to winning ways.

“We're very familiar with Lady Bay having trained there a lot, so we were looking forward to playing there,” she said.

“I think the girls were in good spirits and knew that it was just time to almost have a bit of fun and try out new skills and roles, and we got a good result from it.

“We knew we were on a new pitch that was pretty central, and we knew that the outfield was going to be quick, but maybe we weren’t sure exactly what a good score would be.

“We were pretty happy that we had the opportunity to bowl first, just to see how the conditions played and adapt to that.

“But we quickly recognised that it was going to be a good wicket and a quick outfield and it was going to be a very difficult pitch to defend on.

“I thought we did really well to keep them down to 160, the bowlers did a fantastic job at that.

“It was just a case of getting partnerships together with the bat and that meant that we could get over the line.”

The game’s key partnership came between Elwiss and Tammy Beaumont, with the England opener also making a half-century to break the back of the run chase.

“She's been brilliant,” said Elwiss.

“With her ideas in the field, she’s been helping Marie [Kelly] from a captaincy point of view, but with the bat she's helped cement our innings really and people have been able to bat around her.

“I think some of the younger girls who are coming in through that middle order have really benefited from her being at the other end and sharing ideas, sharing her plans.

“She's always somebody that is really positive at the other end, so she’s somebody that you can rely on to help you through tricky patches of innings and to be able to back your skills.

“We've been really lucky to have her for quite a lot of this season. She's scored some really useful runs but she's also a great person to have around.”
