The Blaze 305-6, defeat Somerset 304-7 by four wickets, with six balls remaining.
All-rounder Georgia Elwiss fought through the pain of an injured hand to record a match-winning unbeaten 75, as The Blaze chased down a whopping total of 304 with an over to spare in Loughborough, to record a fifth victory of their Metro Bank One-Day Cup season.
New Zealand international Maddy Green was sensational to set up the innings for the Blaze middle order to complete the chase, posting 97 runs off 90 balls, including 12 boundaries. She shared a stand of 125 runs with Kathryn Bryce for the second wicket, before Elwiss and captain Kirstie Gordon combined for 67 to clinch victory.
Blaze captain Kirstie Gordon won the toss and elected to bowl, and there was cause for celebration pre-game as Ella Claridge was presented with her 50th Blaze cap by Grace Ballinger, with some heartwarming words from the young seamer to boot.
Bex Odgers and opening partner Emma Corney put on 88 for the first wicket as Somerset’s innings got off to a flying start. They were solid until the 17th over, when Odgers was run out for an impressive 50 off 57 balls.
Leg-spinner Josie Groves then picked up the important wicket of Corney (38), stumped via some sharp work from Sarah Bryce. Georgia Elwiss was rewarded for an excellent spell by having Fran Wilson (28) caught at mid-off from a slower ball, although her injury - picked up fielding off her own bowling - meant she spent the rest of the innings receiving treatment.
Grace Ballinger castled Katie Jones for eight with a superb yorker, but skipper Luff was the fulcrum for Somerset, the 69 added with Alex Griffiths (28) in 11 overs for the fifth wicket giving Somerset a platform to attack.
Griffiths was bowled by Kirstie Gordon when she missed a slog-sweep, and Luff's resistance finally came to a close off the bowling of Kathryn Bryce, caught at short fine leg for 72, having hit seven fours and a six.
But this was followed by a blitz of hitting by Amanda-Jade Wellington, the Australian international adding a quickfire 48 runs off 25 balls, including nine boundaries - to catapult Somerset to a total of 304-7.
Despite losing Georgie Boyce early, Maddy Green and Kathryn Bryce kept their cool, with Bryce particularly getting aggressive early, as The Blaze recovered nicely to 50-1 through the first ten overs.
Green found her range superbly as well, taking the fight to Somerset with a mix of shots behind and in front of the wicket. Somerset continued to suffer until Olivia Barnes bowled Bryce for 59 attempting to sweep, but by then The Blaze were 2-132.
The partnership had added 125 in 18.4 overs, Bryce’s fourth half-century of the competition having come off 47 balls with eight fours, Green’s first for The Blaze also containing eight fours off 51 balls.
Despite gaining momentum, The Blaze knew there was work to be done, and Somerset fought back to claim Sarah Bryce clean bowled. Elwiss joined Green, though at times in obvious pain from her injury, and added another 47 for the fourth wicket. Green played superbly all the way up until the 90s, before she was cruely denied a fifth List A hundred in this calendar year - bowled by Ellie Anderson on 97, with The Blaze 4-198.
Needing just over a hundred to win, Ella Claridge fell in the next over, before Michaela Kirk was trapped lbw for 12, as the chase stuttered slightly.
Despite her discomfort, Elwiss took the responsibility for seeing her side over the line, a superbly judged innings. She recorded her third half-century in Blaze colours, and was ably supported by captain and close friend Kirstie Gordon, as the pair judged the run chase to perfection to see The Blaze over the line.
